The president offers us a lesson in how to leave your own party. Mick Jagger plays roadie.
Rarely have the blues sounded happier.
This is pretty much a perfectly executed piece of choreography - the reluctant (but not that reluctant) performance, the interchange with the band, the landing on "Sweet Home Chicago" and then - exit! Yet it appears to be genuinely spontaneous and when you think about it, it could have gone very wrong. The president is clearly just feeling lucky. And who can blame him?
Let me sound a more authentically bluesy note though: these pictures will play wonderfully well on the evening news to those who already like Obama, or to those Americans who are generally feeling good about life. But to voters who are feeling pessimistic about their job prospects or worried about the state of the nation, seeing the president in party mode may serve only to infuriate.
Can you imagine David Cameron doing that?
Or Miliband? Good God no.
Obama really does have a bit of star quality doesn't he?
