Are you saying that the idea of the Labour party is more appealing than the reality?

Yes, although that doesn't apply uniquely to the Labour Party. When you run Obama against a generic Republican, for instance, he generally does worse than when you run him against Mitt Romney or whoever (though at the moment he's not doing well whatever question you ask).
