If you're a politician running for office in America or a member of that politician's staff there can be few more devastating headlines to wake up to than this, in the New York Times today:
Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat of Connecticut who is running for the Senate, told veterans he “served in Vietnam.” But he did not.
That's on the front page - here's the story itself. Blumenthal's spokesperson has denounced the Times' story as "a lie", and a press conference is being held today to address it. Either they kill the story straight away or, however long it takes, it kills them.
Some great background here - Blumenthal isn't any old politician either; in Connecticut he's renowned for his humble integrity. Was.
