Perhaps I'm missing something here, but in reply to Danny (and perhaps yourself), there's a very good reason it had to be a secret ballot: because unless Gordon steps down, any leadership election cannot be held without a vote at Party Conference. There's no point running a stalking horse against Gordon - they can't open the contest up.


Ah - you may well be right Will. Labour Party electoral college procedures one of the many subjects about which my ignorance nearly perfect.

Hopi Sen's post here (http://hopisen.wordpress.com/2009/05/04/a-blairite-defence-of-gordon-brown/) gives a short overview (starting half way down) from last year's attempts. In the light of which the incompetency of this attempted coup looks even more laughable.
