Gordon Brown has made a point of holding cabinets outside London, around the regions, to show that he and his government are in touch with the people. The president of Maldives has gone several steps further by holding the world's first underwater cabinet meeting. The aim is to signal Maldives's support for a climate change agreement in Copenhagen.

Never understand how this sort of thing works. Are people of influence supposed to go, "well, I was a complete sceptic on climate change but now some guy's done a publicity stunt in the ocean I've changed my mind"?
(was it Liam Callagher who said something similar about pop singers doing anti-poverty concerts?)

Most people don't understand how communications work. Which is why the unthinkingly get into their cars to fetch a paper from the corner shop.
As for the single most pressing issue of our species I'd say that the kind of clients that go to the Maldives will sit up more when they see come across this story. But then they are part of the problem and not the solution.
