Judgements about how Obama is doing have been flying thick and fast (and many of them are very thick) ever since he took the oath. As Bill Emmott says, this seems to be the most over-analysed, judged, praised and condemned young presidency ever - which is partly to do with our hyper-competitive media environment, and partly because Obama, being the first black president, is such a lightning rod.
Every pundit feels like they have to come up with some radical new take on the president's progress. Sometimes it takes a brave and confident commentator to say the boring but true thing, and I think that's what Emmott does here:
A better judgment on President Obama would, in my view, be “doing quite well in the circumstances, but has a long way to go”.
That really is about all one can say right now. Ho hum. Patience, everybody.
