Somewhat lost amidst the AIG shitstorm is that Obama has engaged in an unusual bit of direct diplomacy, releasing a video message to "the people and leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran". It strikes a friendly tone, acknowledging Iran's great contribution to civilization. He includes a quote from the Iranian poet Saadi and ends by getting his mouth around a phrase in Farsi. It's striking to hear Obama use some of the same themes and rhetoric he has become famous for at home in this new context: "There are those who insist that we be defined by our differences..."
