OK so you're the new chairman of the Republican Party. You know that one of your tasks over the next few years is to help the party reach out to women voters. So, you think to yourself, where's the best place to signal a possible shift in the GOP's attitude to abortion? Of course - GQ!
Actually it's unclear if Michael Steele meant to engage in any signaling, or if he was just saying some words, and these are the ones that happened to come out of his mouth that day. This seems to be his standard mode of operation and it is causing his party no end of heartburn already.
It strikes me that Steele's election has been misinterpreted. Everyone assumes that the Republicans looked at the new White House and thought, 'We need a black guy'.
But maybe the truth is, they looked at the new White House and thought 'We need a Biden!'
UPDATE: Steele has had to issue his 256th "clarification" of recent weeks. Apparently when he told GQ that women should have a "choice" about abortion, he meant a choice between breaking the law (abortion) and not breaking the law (no abortion).
