The new chairman of the Republican party is an African-American named Michael Steele. In one way, this is an early positive effect on politics of Obama's victory - there's little doubt that Steele's election was in part the result of the GOP realising, rather more quickly than many had predicted, the urgent need to broaden its appeal. But it's also a huge credit to Steele, who by all accounts fought a great campaign. Nate Silver says he's a politician with serious appeal - and, as ever, backs his opinion up with data.
