It's weak and and rather half-hearted but it's definitely there. The president's approval ratings have turned up, and are now a shade higher than they have been for the last year. They're still dismally low, of course. But it's sumthin', right Dubya?
I think there are two reasons for this. One is the American's people's natural sympathy and generosity. OK the guy was a terrible president, but he's very nearly out the door, and I'm sure he's good to his Mom. The second, and more powerful one, is the Obama effect. As Hillary Clinton found, just being photographed next to the president-elect starts to make people feel all warm and cuddly towards you...
That's why Gordon Brown is itching for a trip to the White House.
