Having watched the BBC's excellent documentary on the late, legendary GOP operative Lee Atwater (he of the Willie Horton tactic) last night, I'm appalled at both campaigns' wishy-washy attempts to go negative. Sure, there's been a bit of namecalling and some dubious innuendos, but nobody has really stepped up to the plate and delivered something really truly obnoxious. Well, yes I suppose that's a good thing.
Anyway, they're much happier accusing each other of being bad boys. Such is the case with this new ad which (and I'm sorry to kick a man when he's down) is more evidence that the McCain campaign has lost its way. Why on earth would you want to spend time and money at this stage of the campaign protesting at how beastly your opponent is? It makes McCain sound petulant and weak and, most damagingly, like a loser. Isn't this what Democrats used to sound like?
