So a deal has been reached. It will probably be formally announced later today, from the White House.
I suspect that McCain's move back to Washington did, at least, make the Dems' efforts to conclude a deal more urgent. I don't know if he will get credit for that.
But more importantly, he's got to do the debate now, hasn't he? If the deal is done, then the panic - for the time being - is over. So it's going to look pretty odd if he sticks by his decision not to turn up. Voters might be annoyed with him for not doing the show if he doesn't.
All of which may not be great for him, because by the sound of it, he has barely done any preparation for the debate at all - unlike his opponent.
But maybe he's about to pull another rabbit out of the hat?
