John McWhorter puts his finger on something when he says that a lot of white people have been voting for Obama because he's a black person who isn't actually, yunno, black. The Wright affair has reminded them that he is black in a fuller sense than just the colour of his skin - and many are uncomfortable with it. (The whole discussion is excellent, by the way).
Although, Obama's recovery in the Gallup national poll (vs Clinton) indicates that his direct addressing of the matter in his speech and elsewhere may have averted serious damage to his candidacy, at least in the short term.
