This NYT story on campaign fundraising reminds us that the biggest spenders haven't always been the winners this time around. Romney spent vast amounts of money in Iowa and beyond and little good it did him. Obama spent a third more than Clinton in Texas and Ohio and still lost.
But it also reminds us of something that will now start to weigh on the minds of the Clintons: they have run up an $8.7 million debt (Obama's campaign, by contrast, is virtually debt-free):
This debt puts additional pressure on Mrs. Clinton: If she wins her party’s nomination, this $8.7 million can be paid off with money raised for her general campaign. If not, she will either have to raise more money to pay off the bills for her primary effort or pay for it out of her own pocket.
