Otto Neurath, born in 1882, was an Austrian sociologist and philosopher who, together with his wife Marie, invented the visual language that formed the basis of modern infographics.
Over at Brainpickings, Maria Popova tracked down an out-of-print book called America and Britain. It compares Britain to America across a series of political, sociological and cultural criteria, using a series of Neurath's beautiful pictograms to bring the information alive. Like these ones:
