This is a letter sent to Gertrude Stein by her exasperated editor, who had just ploughed his way through (or not) one of her rambling manuscripts (here's a reminder of her high style):

A.C. Fifield who? Exactly. This is for you A.C.:
Sorry, tired, lame old fool, who never fooled, will never fool, because old fools, remain unschooled, tired, wearisome, weary A.C. one, you are the one, always the one, alone to yourself, number one, one, one, in your singular obscurity.

Gertrude Stein had one great insight about the way the stab of a single word can stab into your guts when it the stab is repeated over and over and over.
Unfortunately, that's all she knew. To succeed as a novelist, you need more than a single trick.

Ernest Hemingway obviously knew the other trick.

@Tom Hunter. Us one-trick-wonder poets salute you.
Why do people never complain when visual artists do the same thing over and over again (with variation and development of course)? For them it's building a 'visual language' or 'reference', for writers it's a sin. You can't deny Gertrude Stein's contribution to contemporary poetry and how we think about language and the rhythm of language.
I'm not a massive fan, but I certainly wouldn't call her a one trick pony.

but people do complain about visual artist who are one trick ponies and use words to explain their art.

These things are personal. What works for some is simply tedious for others. Shakespeare, as I recall, usually felt that, once you'd said something thrice, you had probably extracted most of the effect for which you were hoping.
