I suppose, if you want to know the answer to the question "Where does money come from?" there are few better places to start than the Bank of England.
That's what Mr T. Cuff reasoned anyway, and to that end made a Freedom of Information request to the Bank. Its Deputy Secretary, Ben Norman, replied with an erudite and lucid two pager:
