President Bush gave an extraordinary final press conference today. Extraordinary not so much because of what he said, but for its emotional tone: the way he switched from goofy to defensive to wistful to angry, sometimes in the space of a single answer. In the first clip here he admits to mistakes over Iraq and Katrina (although, certainly in the case of Katrina, he seems to think that his main mistake was presentational rather than operational). Bush is often reported to be blithely upbeat in the face of the near-universal derision for his record in office, but judging from this evidence he's clearly got more capacity for introspection and reflection than that allows. His inarticulacy is on full display - it's almost painful to watch - but here it seems to be the outer manifestation of some inner, Nixonian struggle with his own conscience.

Frost should save his money; he won't get hours of watchable television from Bush. Nixon at least had some matter between the ears.
