Former Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson thinks everybody should calm down:
It's funny, the same DC wiseguys who confidently predicted a McCain Convention bump ten days ago are now running about waving their arms in the air nervously now that the bump has arrived.
There's some support for Wolfson's sanguine disposition in the latest NBC/WSJ poll:
Obama’s positive rating is at 53%, his highest number on this question; more voters than ever before believe he shares their background and values; and fewer voters than ever think he would be a risky choice for the presidency. “This is a person who is doing exactly what he needs to do to put himself in a position to win this election,” says co-pollster Peter Hart (D).
The bad news for Obama from this poll is that white women have flocked to McCain since the emergence of Palin. But Hart suggests that this effect may be temporary: he thinks Palin is a bubble that may well burst. NBC's Chuck Todd puts it like this:
The McCain campaign needs to keep this (the Palin bubble) going for as long as possible.
Well, to be precise, he needs to keep it going until election day. The bubble is useless to him if it bursts the day or the hour before.
